ICT expected to generate USD50 billion by 2016

MANILA, Philippines - The Aquino administration is confident that the information and communication technology (ICT) industry would be able to deliver $50 billion worth of revenues by 2016 amid the continued strengthening of the peso against the dollar.

Monchito Ibrahim, deputy executive director of the Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communication Technology Office (DOST-ICTO), said the government has laid down the groundwork for the ICT industry.

The BPO phenomenon

IN 2012 the Philippines generated $51.99 billion from merchandise exports, up 7.6 percent from $48.30 billion in 2011. And in the same year the business-process outsourcing (BPO) industry generated $13 billion in revenues, a notable 18-percent growth from its previous $11 billion, according to Budget and Management Secretary Florencio Abad.

They woke up early, some as early as 3 a.m., to get on a bus that would take them to the 1st SMP (Service Management Program) Teachers Camp at Asia Pacific College (APC) in Magallanes Village, Makati City.

The first to arrive were teachers from Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) led by the affable Dr. Joel Bawica, dean of the College of Computer Studies.

From its humble beginnings as Baybay Provincial High School in 1952, LSPU is now spread out over four campuses in San Pablo City, Los Baños, Siniloan and Santa Cruz, the main campus. LSPU also has satellite campuses in Nagcarlan and Lopez, and abroad at the Thai Nguyen University in Vietnam and at the Changwon College in South Korea.

ALI 1Q profit up 30%

Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) said profit for the first quarter of the year reached P2.76 billion, up 30 percent from the previous year’s P2.13 billion. 

“This was achieved as a result of the continued strong performance across the company’s business lines,” the company said in a statement issued yesterday.
